He was a Sākiyan, son of Suddhodana and of Mahā Māyā, Suddhodana’s chief consort, and he belonged to the Gotama-gotta. At age 29 he departed from his home to seek Awakening. Six years later he realized this goal. He spent the remaining 45 years of his life teaching, and died at the age of eighty in Kusināra.
